In case you ever wonder/ed...

My name is Colin James McDowell and, as you may know, my artist name is Blasé (pronounced blah-zay).  I have a (somewhat) interesting cultural background seeing that my father is a man of Irish descent-- from Pattersonville, New York-- and my mother of Hispanic-- from Bogota, Colombia.   I suppose I fall somewhere along the lines of being a cultural hybrid, bridging both of the America's and living a multi-ethnical life.  I do believe that I hone the existential realism of an Irishman and the emotional vigor of a Latino... segueing to the origins of my craft.  I played with word unionship (spoonerisms, morphemes, contractions, alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, etc.) and made silly songs with an old friend of mine (J.Smith) at the tender age of 14 (8th grade).  Now, 6 years have almost passed and I notice that I've progressed into being a practiced, ambitious, and confident musical talent. Don't get me wrong though, there is still plenty to learn (like how to effectively captivate an audience), and I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

Is this the career I subscribe to?  For the time being, a full time musician is an occupation I cannot uphold.  I'm currently enrolled at Old Dominion University and am scheduled to graduate, with a Bachelors degree in Psychology, in the year 2014; so, for now, my focus has been oriented towards my studies and blue collar job. However, I do plan on pursuing music in a more interactive fashion (more performances, licensed tracks, touring, promo, etc.) when I complete my schooling.

Reverting to my upbringing [cause my life wasn't always this boring], I lived in Yokohama, Japan for the first 7 years of my life while my father was active duty Navy.  In 1997 my family made the decision to move to this speck of an island in South East Asia, the equatorial Singapore (1ºN of the equator!).  It's a city/state, semi-utopia, vital harbor, and multi-cultural boiling pot.  Not only that, but it is one of the few countries to successfully embrace authoritarian capitalism (thanks to Lee Kuan Yew).  The next 11 years were the best years of my short life.  I had the benefit of growing up as an expat for my entire life, so I have a global perspective and am the furthest away from being narrow minded when it comes to views and practices...  of course, there are some that I like more than others.  I've been around the world-- Australia, New Zealand, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, France, Spain, U.K. (England/Wales), Ireland, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Holland, Italy, Monaco, Vatican City, Colombia, U.S.A (NY, NJ, VA, MA, GA, CA, FL, NC, D.C., MI, OH, WV, MD, PA, CT, TN, and DE), South Africa-- and won't ever stop!

To Be Continued...

*Come visit me at work sometime soon, just drop by Shelton's Big Grill (I help manage it) in Town Center.  It's the best place to get a cheap, quality meal in Virginia Beach (maybe even Hampton Roads), hands down.  Friend us on Facebook so that you can take advantage of our promotions and discounts!
